Is Satan really the god of this world?

Do you believe in more than one god? Most Christians would say no, but then they would turn around and say that 2 Cor 4 is talking about Satan as the god of this world:

2Cor 4:3-4: “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

So which is it, one god or two?

What Paul is really talking about in this passage has nothing to do with a fallen angel named Satan, but everything to do with God’s judgment being poured out on the Jews who did not believe in Messiah. Paul was quoting the concept found in Psalm 69:

Ps 69:21-23: “They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap. Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.”

The “God of this world” is in reality God Almighty, YHWH, who was pouring out his wrath upon his disobedient people in that age. Hence, they were prevented from seeing the truth, in fulfillment of prophecy.

There is only one God, YHWH, the father of Yeshua. And he continues to offer grace and mercy to all who place their faith in his son as his Anointed One, the Messiah.
