Mat 4:3-4: “And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
In reading this passage, it occurred to me that there are only a few times in Scripture where YHWH God speaks audibly to a group of assembled people (without using an intermediary like an angel or a prophet).
Three that come to mind are: when God spoke the ten commandments, when Yeshua was transfigured (God said, “This is my beloved son, hear him”). A third is right before his crucifixion:
John 12:28: “Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
To me, putting those passages together has an interesting perspective on “words that proceed from the mouth of God” which bring life:
- God giving the ten commandments
- God confirming that Yeshua is his son (and that we should listen to him)
- and God saying he would glorify his son.
Can you think of any other passages where God spoke audibly to a group of people in the Bible? I’d love to see your comments below…
